Cantilever Scaffolding Project in Belfast (Northern Ireland): Overcoming Structural Challenges with Innovation and Expertise
K2 Scaffolding recently completed a cantilever scaffolding project in Belfast, Northern Ireland; delivering a custom solution to a highly complex structural challenge. The project demanded innovative thinking and precise execution from the outset. The primary obstacle was a low-level, non-load-bearing roof, which made traditional scaffolding methods impossible to use.
Innovative Scaffold Design for a Non-Load-Bearing Roof
To overcome this, our team designed a bespoke cantilever scaffold using drop-tube and fitting techniques. Instead of relying on the weak roof for support, we suspended the scaffold from stronger, load-bearing structures above. As a result, we ensured full stability and worker safety throughout the build.
Careful planning focused on even weight distribution and secure anchoring. Therefore, our teams could work with confidence and remain safe at all times.
Access Limitations and Material Handling Solutions
In addition to the structural challenge, access and material handling brought their own difficulties. The building’s height and limited entry points meant all materials had to be craned to the high-level roof. From there, our team manually passed each item through a void left in the centre of the structure. Since direct access to lower levels wasn’t available, this step was essential.
As a result, the operation required precise coordination and constant communication between crews. This approach helped maintain safety standards and avoid delays throughout the build.
Prioritising Safety in a Confined Environment
Moreover, the confined working space added further complexity. We also needed to keep the building fully operational during installation. To address this, we introduced several key safety measures.
Workers accessed the scaffold through internal windows, which allowed safe movement of both personnel and materials. Additionally, we deployed auto-descent inertia reels to provide reliable fall protection. These strategies significantly reduced risks and supported smooth operations in a restricted environment.
